Runhappy: The All-Natural Racehorse
In December of 2014, Runhappy made his debut at Turfway Park. With Adrian Garcia in the irons, Runhappy broke awkwardly from post four. He quickly moved up the pack on the rail and opened up a huge lead over his opponents. Despite veering around the far turn and in the stretch, Runhappy crossed the wire 8 ¼ lengths ahead of the rest of the field. After breaking his maiden in incredible fashion, the racing world began to pay attention to Runhappy. He returned to the racetrack on January 17th, 2015, in the Gr.3 LeComte Stakes. Again, he broke slowly and was bumped twice during the race. Unable to recover, he finished ninth.

Breeders' Cup Sprint (2015)
Malibu Stakes (2015)
In the aftermath of the Gr.3 LeComte Stakes, Maria Borrell took over the training of Runhappy. He made his first two starts for Borrell in allowance races, winning both with Erin Walker in the irons. Because of his successes in the allowance races, Runhappy made a huge jump in class for the seven furlong Gr.1 King’s Bishop Stakes at Saratoga. In stunning fashion, Runhappy took over the lead after the first quarter mile and never gave it up. He won by four lengths, setting the race record at 1:20.54.

Watch the electrifying day when Runhappy made his remarkable debut at Turfway Park! Bursting from behind with an 8-length victory.
The debut was best described by his owner:“I walked over to the computer and my sister-in-law was saying, 'He broke very badly,'” McIngvale recalled with a chuckle. “Then we saw him coming up the rail like a wild horse and it was just hilarious. We just broke out laughing and then he just started running all over the track like he was drunk, then he stopped to get a hot dog and he still finished eight in front. It was crazy. It was just too much.”

Black Caviar's first race outside Australia turned into a piece of astonishing drama that thrilled 77,000 people here and millions around the world, leaving only her jockey, Luke Nolen, ashen and full of regret. The 32-year-old brought his mount within inches of a first defeat through a shocking mistake, allowing her to coast unaided through the last 100 yards, so that she was almost caught by two fast-finishing rivals, winning by a head.
"I didn't misjudge the winning post," he said, moments after dismounting, though that was surely what it looked like to the sellout crowd in the stands and to the thousands who packed Melbourne's Federation Square to watch their local hero on a big screen at 1am on a winter's night.
In the weeks leading up to the Diamond Jubilee Stakes, those close to the mare radiated confidence, dismissing many inventive suggestions about what could go wrong, but the unthinkable was nearly brought about by the mundane means of pilot error.
