THE GREATEST KENTUCKY DERBY WINNERS
War Admiral (USA)
War Admiral, ridden by Charley Kurtsinger, after completing the Triple Crown sweep in 1937 with a victory in the Belmont Stakes.
The Might Atom
The 2003 movie “Seabiscuit” portrays War Admiral as a horse as large as his accomplishments, the literal embodiment of Goliath to the titular Seabiscuit’s turn as David. In reality, the two horses, both with the blood of the immortal Big Red running through their veins, were essentially the same size, Seabiscuit a mere half-inch taller than the Triple Crown winner.
At 15 hands, 2 inches, War Admiral might not have had the same mighty physique as his cinematic version, but he certainly had the stamina, the speed, and the spirit necessary to win the Triple Crown and a spot in the Hall of Fame alongside his immortal sire all because of that turning point, when one man decided that family harmony meant saying no to a potential champion.

THE KENTUCKY DERBY
Byron King’s Derby Dozen
BloodHorse news editor Byron King presents his Derby Dozen with a look at his leading contenders for the Kentucky Derby Presented by Woodford Reserve on May 4.
The final qualifying points prep race for the 150th Derby was held on April 13, and now several contenders are already at Churchill Downs and training for the big race, while the rest are due to arrive before the morning deadline on Saturday, April 27.

1. Fierceness
In his penultimate work April 19 at Palm Beach Downs in Florida before the Kentucky Derby at Churchill Downs, Fierceness zipped around the track – he’s a top-level work horse – covering five furlongs in 1:00.50 under Hall of Fame jockey John Velazquez. He always had workmate Agate Road at his mercy, as well he should, given the latter, a graded stakes winner on turf, is not as speedy and likely a bit better on grass than dirt. He left his stablemate in the dust on the gallop out. Now he is at Churchill, where his final work is anticipated April 26.

2. Sierra Leone
The Risen Star Stakes and Toyota Blue Grass Stakes winner left a positive impression in his most recent breeze, a :48.80 half-mile move at Keeneland April 20. Though he finished on even terms with his workmate, maiden special weight winner White Palomino, take note that a heads-apart finish is the norm for in-company moves for trainer Chad Brown. More important is to gauge how his workers finish and whether they are in hand for their riders. That was the case for Sierra Leone. “As you can see, he’s barely blowing,” Brown told reporters shortly after the breeze. He will likely be among many breezing horses April 27 at Churchill.

KEE1:042624 – 5 1/2f on the Turf. 12 fillies will try their luck over the lawn for the first time this spring. The lineup of trainers in this one is solid – two from John A. Hancock and one each from Ennis, Mark Casse, Maker, Ward, McEntee, and Arnold. The sires that I’ve circled are Munnings (2), More Than Ready, Mendelssohn, and Kantharos, along with newbie sire War of Will. Let’s do a deep dive on five of these…
#4 – Flip Flops (4/1) – Mark Casse will saddle his second juvenile in two days for owner Gary Barber in this grassy affair. She will be the first starter from first-year sire, War of Will, and her winless dam (0/1) comes by way of Munnings (this is her first foal of racing age). Barber plunked down $85,000 for this gal last year when she was a yearling (32/67). Casse put her through her paces twice in March at his training facility earning two small bullets and then has given her two more works over at Churchill. Her first was a ½ mile breeze in 48 seconds flat (10/111) and then, most recently, a three-panel freshener in 36 flat (3/5). Jose Ortiz will handle the riding duties.
#6 – Goth (10/1) – This filly is by the late More Than Ready, out of a Street Cry mare who never made it to the racetrack. She hammered for $40,000 as a yearling and is trained by Mike Maker. She’s only worked out three times (11 total furlongs), all over the synthetic surface at Turfway Park. Her last effort was a nice four furlong move completed in 47.8 seconds breezing from the gate (3/20). Luis Saez gets the assignment to be her reinsman.
